본 논문은 북한 청년을 ‘사이(in-between)세대’로 정의하고 이들의 세대적 의식과 경험 체계를 심층적으로 기술하면서, 북한 청년의 특징을 세대적 ‘마음’이라는 개념을 활용하여 분석하고자 한다. 즉 북한의 ‘사이(in-between)세대’가 어떻게 자신들의 양가적인 위치와 정체성을 활용하고 있는지 기성세대와 비교하여 살펴보는 것이 본 연구의 주요 목적이다. 북한의 청년은 기성세대와 연계되어 있는 의식과 경험세계를 구축하고 있으면서도 그 이면의 감정, 욕망, 의지 등의 영역에서는 기성세대와 구분되는 차이를 만들어가고 있다. 특히 동경할 과거가 존재하지 않는다는 것과 불분명한 미래는 이들이 불안감에 기초한 마음을 구성하게 하지만, 반면에 어느 곳에도 완전히 속하지 못한 이들의 정체성은 또 다른 가능성을 배태하고 있음을 본 연구는 주목한다.
This article defines young North Koreans as the ‘in-between’ generation, and aims to analyze its generational identity and experiences. In particular, this research uses ‘mind’ as a conceptual framework to analyze the features of the ‘in-between’ generation in North Korea. That is, it focuses on how North Korean ‘in-between’ generation facilitates its ambivalent position and hybridized identity in comparison to the older generation. Young north Koreans construct its rationality and experiences that is heavily related to older generation, but they also have differences from the older generations in terms of emotion, desire, and willingness. This research pays special attention to the fact that their ambivalent position would conceive another possibilities for the future.
